The agricultural institute of Gujarat came into existence in the year 1947 with five main departments which included the ‘Department of Agricultural Botany’. This department was initially headed by Prof. P. M. Patel. There after many distinguished professors namely Dr. R. M. Patel, Dr. H. A. Joshi, Dr. V. C. Amin, Dr. A. K. Sanhi, Dr. S. A. Patel, Dr. M. K. Bhalala, Dr. P. R. Godhani, Dr. A. D. Patel, Dr. P. T. Shukla, Dr. G. C. Jadeja, Dr. D. B. Patel, Dr. Sasidharan N., Dr. D. A. Patel and Dr. Akarsh Parihar adorned this chair. Currently this department is headed by Dr. Sneha Macwana.
In 2014 the ‘Department of Agricultural Botany’ was renamed as ‘Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding’ as suggested by the Peer Review Committee.
The main activity of the department is imparting education to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the disciplines of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Plant Molecular Biology & Biotechnology. Pertinent research work is also being carried out in these disciplines with significant outcomes.
Different research schemes under RKVY, GSBTM, GoG and GoI had been operated in past with significant outcomes. The department has identified many important areas of research in crops such as rice, maize, pearl millet, mustard, sesame, soybean and vegetable crops; and in major fruit crops like Mango and Citrus under a newly sanctioned plan scheme (2023)

To carry out departmental research in the field of conventional and modern plant breeding
Train final year students in the area of plant tissue culture through Experiential Learning Program (ELP)
Offering guidance to the under graduate students for JRF examination and P.G. students for SRF, NET, ARS and other competitive examination and personality development
Extending extension services to the farmers by participation in agricultural fair, Krishi Mahotsav, Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav.
Provide valuable practical exposure to the students through visit to Seed Production as well as Seed processing industries.
