INTRODUCTION

Department of Animal Science at the College of Agriculture, Anand Agricultural University, Vaso, is primarily involved in undergraduate and diploma teaching. Since its inception, it offers undergraduates and diploma courses at the College of Agriculture & Polytechnic in Agriculture, Vaso. At present, the department offers two undergraduate courses for B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture programme as per the Fifth Deans’ Committee and two diploma courses on animal production for Polytechnic in Agriculture, Vaso. Along with teaching, the department is also involved in research and extension activities in the field of animal husbandry.

OBJECTIVES

1. To impart under graduate teaching to B.Sc. (Hons.) agriculture students.
2. To impart diploma teaching to Polytechnic agriculture students.
3. To impart the practical exposure and technical guidance related to animal husbandry practices to students and farmers.
4. To conduct the research or technical programme related to livestock production practices.

• TEACHING

Department of Animal Science conducts regular theory and practical sessions for the students of Diploma in Agriculture and B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture:

Rural Awareness Work Experience (RAWE) programme:  Under RAWE programme, the Department of Animal Science carries out the departmental orientation programme, on-campus training, visits of various research stations/KVKs/villages/agro-industries and progressive farmers engaged in dairy and poultry farming.

Department of Animal Science is also engaged with research activities and aspires to conduct more researches that facilitate animal production. Department of Animal Science offers extension-related services to farmers and dairy entrepreneurs. Here is the list of the extension activities carried out by the department:

Lectures Delivered as a Resource Person:

Delivered lecture on Animal Husbundary to Farmers

Adaptive Trials:

Conducted adaptive trails on Hybrid Napier Grass: Total 20,000 no. of root slips of hybrid Napier grass were distributed to dairy farmers of Vaso, Nadiad and Matar taluka for fodder production during 2016-2019.

FACILITIES

Laboratory \ Practical Classroom:

Department of Animal Science has a well-furnished laboratory/practical classroom equipped with a computer, LCD projector, educational charts, and internet facilities. It also demonstrates various animal models of Murrah buffalo, Kankrej bull, Frieswal cow, Gir cow, Patanwadi sheep, Surti goat, and Aseel cock. The department also has a model of Ruminant Stomach and a model set of teeth - Dentition of Cattle. The department has different types of equipment such as Gerber Centrifuge machine, Electric De-beaking Machine, ‘EKOMILK’ Milk Analyzer, Cryoseal LN2 Container 10.5 litres, Universal AI Gun, Cream Separator-Hand driven, Vernier Callipers, Surgical Instruments set, Animal identification tools kit, Animal grooming & Hoof care kit, Animal Restraints set, Burdizzo Castrator and others.

1. Research abstract entitled “Knowledge of clean milk production practices by dairy farmers” was presented by Dr. M.N. Jegoda at ISAPM national conference 2020 at Jaipur.

2. Research abstract paper on “Adoption of clean milk production practices by dairy farmers” in National conference and 25th Annual Convention of ISAPM on “Smallholders Livestock Producers’ in India: Opportunities and Challenges” was held at Sardarkrushinagar, SDAU, during 11-13, April 2018.
