Seed Spices Research Station, Sanand

Introduction

 

Sanand is situated on Ahmedabad – Viramgam state highway 20 km in west of Ahmedabad. The research station is situated on the Sanand Railway Station Road. Geographically, It is situated at 230 00 ' N Latitude and  720 22 ' E Longitude and 60.27 m above sea level. It falls under North Gujarat Agroclimatic Zone – IV and AES Zone –IX. Average rainfall of last five years is 500 mm. Temperature ranges between Min. 8 C  and  Max. 46 C.  Soil type is medium black.

 

Sanand Station was established in the year 1979-80 with the mandate to conduct research on ‘Gadaku’ or Hooka tobacco which was grown in the vicinity. Ten research recommendations for the farmers as well as scientific community were released for the ‘Gadaku’ tobacco as a result of experimentation for two decades.

 

Mandate of the station was changed during the year 2002-03 due to reduction in cultivation of ‘Gadaku’ tobacco and seed production of newly released crop varieties to disseminate the latest agricultural technologies to the farmers was taken up.

 

The cropping pattern in and around Ahmedabad district is changing towards castor and seed spices cultivation. Therefore, Anand Agricultural University has changed the mandate of research of this station from 1st April 2008 and started research focusing on crop improvement and crop production techniques of castor and seed spices to cater to the needs of increasing area under these crops in the area of influence.
