Two years diploma course named as “Agricultural School” was run for SSC (Xth Std.) passed students, only in the faculty of agriculture, at 14 different centers across the state under the control of Agricultural universities of Gujarat till 2008-09 and at other centers till the year 2009-10. In the Agricultural School, twelve subjects were taught in Gujarati medium and examination system was yearly. Innovative ideas of establishment of polytechnic programmes in various faculties are recently implemented to meet the demand for middle level technocrats in agrarian community.
Now Agricultural schools are upgraded in to Polytechnics (Diploma) Programmes in various faculties like Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Horticulture, Agro processing and Food Science & Home economics etc.
The duration of polytechnics is of three years divided in to six semesters. Candidates who have passed SSC (Xth Std.) examination with English as compulsory subject are eligible for admission in polytechnics absolutely on merit basis. Medium of instruction is English. Boys and girls both are eligible for admission in polytechnic programmes.
Polytechnic in Agriculture at Anand came in to existence since 27th May, 2008 and known as "Sheth M.C. Polytechnic in Agriculture". However, the academic programmes were commenced from the academic year 2009-10 with following objectives.
Objectives:
1. To impart theoretical and practical training to the secondary passed students to develop skilled manpower in Agriculture.
2. To provide technical person to Government sectors, NGOs, Agro-based industries etc.
3. Students will be able to get admission in the higher education of B.Sc. (Agri.) degree course.
In order to achieve the objectives and to meet to-day's need of an agriculture sector. Total 48 courses including five specialized areas identified for experiential learning covering 12 disciplines are designed for newly sanctioned polytechnic in agriculture in such a manner that high quality theoretical and practical training shall be imparted to the students.
